May 22nd, 2011

So Kirk and Curt woke up this morning, packed up, and headed back to Kansas City.  The pantry and door projects were complete.  I was excited to get the pantry organized and free up some of the kitchen cabinets, which was the first thing I did.  It took much longer than I expected, but we also donated quite a few things and reorganized the basement cabinets too.

So here’s the old pantry in all her glory.  We also had old school folding hinge doors to cover the chaos.

And here’s the new version.  Instead of doing different shelving, Kirk came up with the idea of making the whole area custom cabinets.  Way more efficient and user friendly.

The top cabinet on the left.  So much nicer to open and see what is in there and have things more organized.

Two wire basket pullouts on the bottom left cabinet.

Then here’s the new door from the inside.

And the outside.

Now that’s what I call a door to be proud of!  Now we have to get a storm door and do some painting around the door frame, but we’re getting there little by little.

There was tons of aftermath to clean up and packaging to break down.  We also promised the girls we would take them strawberry picking.  We were due at my parent’s house for my dad’s birthday at 4:30.  There was no way all of this would happen.  We decided it made the most sense for me to take the girls strawberry picking while Trent stayed home to clean up.  Between you, me, and the fence post, I think I got the better gig.

Strawberry picking took much longer than normal.  One reason was Trent wasn’t there, but the other reason is Sydney spent the first 15 or 20 minutes eating the strawberries she picked AND the ones I would put in her box.  I didn’t feed the girls lunch and they were making up for it in the strawberry fields.  Good thing Eckerts only weighs the strawberry boxes and not people before and afterwards.  That might have added another pound or two of strawberries to our bill.

I put bibs on both the girls.  Fresh strawberries are juicy mothers.

That is what 7.8 pounds of strawberries look like in case you ever wondered.

At Eckert’s farm in Belleville they have a frozen custard shop I’ve always wanted to try.  I LOVE frozen custard.  So we decided to have frozen custard for lunch.  I ordered the caramel apple pie concrete.  As you can see, it’s no where to be seen and was worth every calorie.  The girls made sure their peanut butter cup concretes disappeared as well.

Definitely a fun filled busy weekend.  Thanks to Kirk and Curt we got 2 major house projects done, we had some good family time, the house is cleaned and organized, I took the girls to our school’s spirit fest, strawberry picking, lions, tigers, bears, and now off to my parents house for my Dad’s birthday party.

Our annual trip to Eckert's is definitely one of my favorites and I was sorry I couldn't go this year (especially after learning that frozen custard was involved!!) but am glad that house projects are getting accomplished!! I love the pic of Lauren with Syd in the background picking strawberries! Lauren looks like she wants you to hurry up and take the picture so she can go back to eating!
